POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP: WOMEN?S HEALTH RESEARCH UNIT UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN The Women?s Health Research Unit (WHRU) in the School of Public Health and Family Medicine at the University of Cape Town invites applications for a postdoctoral research fellowship, for a period of one year starting in 2013with the possibility of renewal for a further year.

The WHRU, an accredited UCT research unit since1996, has achieved local, national and international research standing in the areas of sexual and reproductive health and gender issues. The Unit is involved in research, teaching, technical health service support, and advocacy in the area of women?s health. It is made up of a multidisciplinary team of researchers with expertise in public health, epidemiology, sociology and anthropology.

The successful postdoctoral fellow will be required to conduct research with senior Unit members in the field of women?s sexual and reproductive health and rights. The fellow will assist with all aspects of developing and implementing research projects including research grant writing, data analysis and report writing and other dissemination activities such as manuscript writing. As part of the fellow?s professional development, he/she will also be required to participate in limited teaching and supervision.


  *   Postdoctoral fellowships are only available to individuals who have achieved their doctoral degree within the past 5 years.

  *   Applicants may not previously have held full-time professional or academic posts.

  *   The successful incumbent will be required to comply with UCTs approved policies, procedures and practises for the postdoctoral sector.

Value and Tenure:

The value of the fellowship is R 185,000 for a full academic year and includes relocation expenses. An additional R15,000 will be available annually for conference attendance and/or travel costs. The tenure of the fellowship is 12 months and renewal for a second year is possible at the discretion of the University and WHRU and subject to satisfactory academic progress and availability of funds.

Academic Criteria

  *   The PhD must have been awarded in the past 5 years.

  *   The applicant must also hold a Master?s degree in Public Health.

  *   The successful candidate will be required to demonstrate quantitative skills in epidemiology and biostatistics and competence in statistical analysis and software programmes.

  *   The successful candidate will be required to demonstrate insight and have research experience in sexual and reproductive health and women?s health.

Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in grant proposal writing and in coordinating and managing research projects.
