Things that keep me busy – Part 1

I’ve only been here about 2 weeks but I can definitely attest to the warm nature of Malawians, from the vegetable markets on weekends to our staff – every single person I’ve come across has been warm and welcoming, and even more so, genuinely happy! Its amazing what just a simple smile or a joke can do to lift spirits. Despite this, the numbers tell a different story, I’ve been spending a lot of time lately getting up to speed with this crazy little country, and since I’m a numbers geek here are a couple of quick facts on the Republic of Malawi (focused on the health system):

  • Child Death Rate: 92 per 1,000
  • Infant Death Rate: 79 per 1,000
  • Life Expectancy: 53 years
  • Poverty Rate: 52%
