Institute for Interdisciplinary Training and Research (IITR) at Mbarara University of Science and Technology Presents
The Second Annual IITR Essay Writing Contest
Contest Deadline: Wednesday, October 22nd
Announcement: With the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) on the horizon, there is no better time to show-case student talents then during this celebratory time in MUST’s history. While the IITR Essay Writing Contest will continue to be held annually, this year’s festivities allow for a unique opportunity to widely disseminate students work across campus during this time of Jubilee.
This competition is meant to highlight the collaborative and interdisciplinary nature of the IITR and MUST, and show-case student opinions and experiences across campus and beyond.
The writing competition was established in 2013 to develop, acknowledge and encourage interdisciplinary writing skills.
The Essay Prompts:
This year’s prompts for the Essay Writing contest fall into three topic categories. As a contestant, your essay must respond to ONE of the following prompts:
1. Describe your experience as a student at MUST, and analyze your role as a student and how your time at University is helping you to fulfill your personal potential.
2. Describe issues in the community, and how MUST students, faculty, and staff can aid the empowerment of these communities.
3. Describe development issues facing Uganda at large, and the role that students can play in addressing these issues in the current moment.
Essay Structure requirements:
Essays must be between 1000 and 1500 words, in Times New Roman font size 12, with 1.5 line spacings.
Selection of the best candidates will be in three stages: 1) preliminary stage, 2) semi-final and 3) final stage. At the final stage, 9 best contestants will be given an opportunity to present their ideas to a panel of judges who will then announce the best candidate for each of the prize categories. The prizes for 2014/2015 will be awarded during the forthcoming Silver Jubilee festivities and could amount to 300,000 shillings in total.
Deadlines: The deadline for submission to the prize is Wednesday, October 22nd 2014. All submissions must be send via email to Madame Prudence Kemigisha Byambwenu at firstname.lastname@example.org.
